Gregor Schaefer is a versatile musician. He has played crossover world music in the Grote Zaal of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Big band jazz at the North Sea Jazz Festival. Balkan music in front of 1000 hippies at a festival near Melbourne. Arab music in Paradiso, Amsterdam. Traditional Jewish klezmer in synagogues in the Netherlands and Germany. Bulgarian dance music in Bulgarian villages. Music for silent movies in Deventer. He recorded Hungarian folk music in the Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee; this music can be heard on the soundtrack of the movie 'Everything Is Illuminated'.
That is a long list of different styles — and when he performs them during concerts or recordings, a number of constant aspects of his playing become evident: an unpolished yet clear sound, solid grooves and strong interplay.
